Located in San Francisco’s historic Jackson Square, Canessa Gallery Artists Resource hosts month long exhibitions of the work of contemporary artists, a long running poetry reading series and collaborative office spaces.

The gallery and offices were founded in 1966 shortly after the famous Black Cat gay nightclub and the old Italian Canessa Printing Company closed. At the time the building still had direct current electricity for a freight elevator and gaslights.

There are three private offices, four work stations and a meeting room and conference room in the gallery. Two offices and four work stations are occasionally available. It has always been a diverse work environment with the tenants working in fields such as finance, consulting and design.

Tenants stay a long time because Canessa is spacious, skylit and well ventilated with no corridors, elevators or any corporate presence. Many have stayed as long as fifteen years.

Bocadillos is downstairs where the Black Cat was and is very good. Since Canessa is at the intersection of the Financial District, Chinatown and North Beach, there is one of everything within walking distance.
